Emotional Abuse

"The underlying goal of emotional abuse is to control the victim by discrediting, isolating, and silencing.

Emotional abuse rarely leaves visible wounds. Instead, it slowly erodes identity, confidence, autonomy, and self-worth. The attached lollipop transforms the image into a visual metaphor—a "soul sucker"—representing the gradual extraction of self that occurs through coercive control, intimidation, isolation, and fear.

In the final weeks of the relationship, the perpetrator asked whether I remained because I was afraid to leave. I was too afraid to answer truthfully. By then, the effects of the abuse had become visible even to him. This work speaks to that deterioration: the slow consumption of a person's spirit until they feel trapped between enduring the abuse and risking the consequences of escape.

The piece reflects how emotional abuse often functions—not through a single act, but through the cumulative erosion of the self.

In the end, the victim feels trapped. They are often too wounded to endure the relationship any longer, but also too afraid to leave. So the cycle just repeats itself until something is done.

The perpetrator recognized the deterioration but not as a reason to stop the abuse. Instead, it became evidence of the power imbalance that had been created. I was trapped between the fear of staying and the fear of leaving.
