NOTE: We must top using the term "revenge porn". It’s victim blaming, prolongs women’s trauma, it’s inaccurate and is one of the key reasons why this abuse is minimised and ignored. It can be image based sexual abuse, intimate image abuse, nonconsensual intimate images, abusive images, whatever, just not "revenge" porn. Ten years ago erika Rackley called for this term not to be used, and coined the term image based sexual abuse.

Excerpt from an email sent to me by the man who abused me, threatening "revengeporn" because I ran from his violence:

".....I am in so much pain.....I can't sleep or eat or do anything of value. You broke your promise to never block communication between us, a class A violation designed to keep you dusting your foken feet while I suffer with seemingly no way to fight back against your deballing of my manhood."

After I escaped his violence and blocked communication, he accused me of 'deballing' his manhood. This painting takes that language literally. It is not a portrait of masculinity but of entitlement—the belief that a woman's autonomy, boundaries, and safety are an injury to male identity. The orange form echoes the color of a prison jumpsuit, linking concepts of masculinity, accountability, and consequence. The work examines how accountability is often reframed by perpetrators as victimization.

"Lead researcher Dr. Afroditi Pina from the University's School of Psychology and her colleagues suggest revenge porn perpetrators have a distinct personality profile that makes them more likely to commit the heinous crime. The research team found a positive correlation between the greater likelihood to engage in revenge porn and displaying higher levels of the "Dark Triad" psychological characteristics. The "Dark Triad" focuses on three personality traits: narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy; "dark" eludes to the person possessing these traits as having malevolent qualities. Impulsivity and lack of empathy were the most strongly tied to the likelihood someone would commit the crime.

People with these personality traits are also more likely to want to stay friends after a breakup, but for personal gain. Specifically, those who scored high for narcissism were more likely to choose "practicality and the chance of hooking up" as reasons for prolonging a former romantic relationship. Unsurprisingly, these people have trouble letting go, and seek revenge to further exert their power and control over their victims."

  • Narcissistic Abuse: Turns out, narcissists are more likely to post revenge porn online.

  • Senate Bill S5650 Relates to establishing the crime of coercive control; provides that a person is guilty of coercive control when he or she engages in a course of conduct against a member of his or her same family or household, without the victim's consent, which results in limiting or restricting, in full or in part, the victim's behavior, movement, associations or access to or use of his or her own finances or financial information; and provides that coercive control is a class E felony.
